Rapha + BAUM

One-of-a-kind titanium bicycles handmade in Australia for members of the Rapha Cycling Club.

Mechanically minded from an early age, Darren Baum started building bikes in his teens and hasn’t looked back. At the helm of Baum Cycles, he now has over 30 years’ experience hand crafting bespoke bicycles.

The small factory in which Baum Cycles handcrafts its bespoke titanium bicycles may be more than 10,000 miles from Rapha’s London headquarters, but the two brands could barely be closer aligned. Both founded by passionate cyclists with a deep appreciation for the sport’s history and beauty, Rapha and Baum are dedicated to creating products of the highest quality.

30 years ago, Darren set out to build a bike frame that was better than anything else in the hope of furthering his own racing career. And a few years later, Simon started Rapha to create high performance cycling clothing that was functional but also beautiful. If they had played by the rules, neither brand would exist and our latest collaboration would not be possible.

Rapha’s relationship with Baum stretches back over a decade and several special edition frames. In 2012, as part of the Rapha Continental Australia, we worked closely together on a limited edition Corretto frame that we showed at the Australian Custom Bicycle Show. With a unique paint job that incorporated Rapha gazette paper directly into the wet coat, the one-off frame required over 80 hours of dedicated craftsmanship.

In subsequent years, we’ve combined forces to support local cycling clubs, most recently Norwood CC in Adelaide. Rapha has been a long time supporter of the club, sponsoring races and producing the club kit. In 2019, we launched a jersey, available to NCC and RCC members, that celebrated the annual Willunga Hill pilgrimage we co-host each January, while Darren built a one-off frame to support the launch.

Our shared passion for the sport has always connected us and now we are delighted to team up once again to create something extra special for Rapha Cycling Club members: a special edition version of Baum’s next generation all-rounder road bike, the Orbis.

Only 100 frames will be made and RCC members will have the choice of two frame options. 75 framesets will be available via the ReadyMade service, which offers significant personalisation of seven standard frame sizes. And for members in search of individualised ride characteristics and handling, a further 25 framesets will be available through the Tailored service.

No matter the frame option, all RCC members will enjoy an expedited service. Rather than the usual lead time of 9 months, Tailored builds will be ready in around 4 months while ReadyMade frames will be available in 8-10 weeks, allowing you to hit the road sooner.

Assembled by hand in Geelong by Baum’s small team of expert engineers, each frame will fit like a glove and receive a custom finish that reflects its rider. As well as the Club’s signature stripes, every frame will feature a local Chapter icon on the top tube and a personalised RCC number etched into the chainstay.

The Orbis frame at the heart of the build has been years in the making and delivers everything a modern disc-brake road bike should. Designed for riders who spend most of their time on the tarmac but sometimes venture beyond, the titanium frame has clearance for wider tyres, with 28c provided as standard.

An increased bottom bracket drop, re-engineered bottom bracket interface and formed chainstays all help further optimise the Orbis to all-road riding and showcase Baum’s very best workmanship.

Under the hood(s) the bike is equipped with Shimano’s latest Dura Ace Di2 R9200 groupset* for instant, accurate shifting and powerful modulated braking. The Shimano Dura Ace WH-R9270 wheelset offers the opportunity for further customisation with a choice of three rim depths to suit various terrains.

Meanwhile the cockpit is composed of lightweight components from ENVE, who provide the handlebar, stem and seatpost. Topping it all, there’s a choice of saddles from Pro or Turnix and comfortable, high grip bar tape from SILCA.

*The bikes pictured here feature an older version of the Dura Ace groupset.
