FULL CIRCLE

Coming full circle, this final prototype of the 2024 Classic Seamless Knit is the purest expression of Past Forward. Using a merino wool based blend of yarns, it is constructed on a circular knitting machine using the latest seamless technology. Inspired by Rapha’s first and most iconic design – the Classic Jersey – the idea was to honour this by exploring the pinnacle of performance textiles using natural fibres.

The Past

Rapha's Sportwool Jersey, which later became the Classic Jersey, was an understated monochrome short-sleeve jersey with full zip, meticulously crafted and made with a merino wool and polyester blend fabric, the first of its kind in the 21st century. A traditional material reincarnated, it was a singular creation with rider-specific features and obsessive attention to detail, embodying Rapha’s pure aesthetic and artful functionality.

Wool garments have existed since the birth of cycling, countless miles have been engraved on the world's roads by heroes of the sport and amateur riders alike in woollen jerseys. From the first pink yarns of the Maglia Rosa to Rapha’s modern manifestations in merino – the importance of wool is there for all to see.

The Forward

Rapha’s continued legacy of using merino wool in performance cycling apparel is now evolved once more with the Seamless Classic Knit. Both homage to the past and a projection of the future of knitted sports fabrics, it has been developed in tandem with Eva & Carola – experts in circular and seamless knits.

The Past Forward gradient pattern is taken from this very jersey, using modulating densities of yarn to create varying texture and form. The manufacturing process also inspired artists Isabel + Helen, creators of the kinetic and immersive installation that you can see in the exhibition.

Rapha Design

Using contemporary methods and processes, but taking aesthetic inspiration from mid-century road cycling, futurism, fashion and modernist typography, whilst being drenched in the romance of the sport – Rapha’s avant-garde innovations disrupted the status quo, changing the cycling industry forever. 

Since then this rebellious approach has seen Rapha worn by Tour de France winners and receive accolades from around the world. Today, the brand has transcended the cycling industry to become a global movement.

The Classic Seamless Knit is available to pre-order at our PAST FORWARD pop-up at the Truman Building between 14th – 22nd September, with the product to be shipped by the end of the year.
